Breast intentions logo
Our goal is to encourage young women to take an active stance on their health, learn about their risks for breast cancer and perform a self breast exam each month. In association with Breast Intentions®, we strive to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention techniques in order to empower, educate, strengthen, and inspire women. So sign the Pink Pact and Check Yourself Out!
You Feelin' me?
our goals
Teach young women how to develop a healthy lifestyle.
Teach young women to understand the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
Help students discover intergenerational risk for breast cancer by talking about family medical history.
Provide valuable service opportunities for students through Breast Intentions® focusing on breast cancer awareness in their own community.
It’s estimated that approximately 211,240 women will be diagnosed with a new invasive case of breast cancer. Tragically, breast cancer will claim the lives of 40,000 women, leaving behind grieving families and young children. While millions of dollars are raised each year to fund the research effort for finding a cure, awareness and early detection are our best defense against breast cancer.
the pink pact
educational program
The Pink Pact Educational Program was created by Erika Rech and Mike Ruane to teach young women about breast health and the need for self examinations. Erika and Mike have brought their program to high schools around New Jersey. The program is presented as an assembly, with poster contests, prizes, free giveaways, and features speakers familiar with the breast cancer journey.

As NJ Heroes, Mike and Erika’s program is funded in part by First Lady Mary Pat Christie and the NJ Heroes Grant Program. Bring the program to your school and earn volunteer hours!

How to do a breast self-exam

In the Shower

Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to examine the left breast, left hand for the right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot, or thickening. Carefully observe any changes in your breasts.

Before a Mirror

Inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.

Look for any changes in the contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Then rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women's breasts do.

Lying Down

Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. With the fingers of your left hand flat, press your right breast gently in small circular motions, moving vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast.

Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

When Do I Do It?

Breast Self Exam should be performed a few days after your period ends. Remember this – "When Your 'Friend' is gone, Grab your Girls." This will help you to remember the time each month that you should be performing self-exam.

REMEMBER! Your breast health is in your hands! Check Yourself Out! Feel Your Boobies! Touch Your Ta Ta’s! Grab Your Girls! It’s in Your Hands!
